The addition of Star content however means that Disney Plus will now include series and movies that aren’t family-friendly, such as Deadpool 2. If you’ve got kids at home and want to keep them from accessing these sorts of things, then you’ll need to know how to turn on the parental control features. We’ve pulled together everything you need to know to enable these features – keep on reading to find out more. We also a guide on to how to cancel your Disney+ account.

How to enable parental controls in Disney+

Disney+ subscribers will be given the choice to opt in for Star content (TV shows and films with a 14+ rating or above) from the first time that they log in after the Star launch (23 February). Disney Plus offers seven profiles, meaning that you can set different parental controls for different profiles, and lock off profiles with PINs. Disney has confirmed to Tech Advisor that the experience for setting up parental controls is the same across all devices. The account saves your settings to all the devices you have Disney+ on, meaning you only have to set parental controls once should you wish.  If however your household has multiple Disney+ accounts (you’ve signed up with multiple email addresses), then you will need to change the settings on each account.  All of these methods have been checked by us and confirmed by Disney.

How to opt in/out of Disney+ Star content

You’ll have the option to enable or disable Star content from the first time you log in after 23 February. Here’s what you need to do:

Open Disney+ and choose your profile. When the Star page pops up, select ‘Continue’

If you want movies and TV with an 18+ rating, select ‘FULL CATALOGUE’. If you don’t, select ‘Not Now’

Confirm your choice by logging in with your password

Choose whether you want to create a profile PIN

If you selected ‘CREATE PROFILE PIN’, enter this now

Choose whether you want to select age ratings for other profiles on your account

If you opt to skip these options, the Disney+ library will automatically default to a 14+ rating. You can change this anytime by entering the settings.

Set an age rating for the Disney+ library

You can tailor the age range of the profile even further from within the settings of your account. Here’s the steps you need to take:

Open Disney+Click on your profile icon and choose ‘Edit Profiles’ from the dropdown menuChoose the profile you want to editUnder the ‘Parental Controls’ section, select the arrow next to ‘Content Rating’ and enter your passwordSelect the content rating you want for your film and TV library – you can choose from 6+, 9+, 12+, 14+, 16+ and 18+

The library and search functions will now only display titles specific to these ratings. You can change the rating any time from within the settings.

How to set a profile PIN

If you choose not to set a PIN when you confirm the age ratings, you’ll still be able to enable one at a later date. Here’s the steps you need to take:

Open Disney+Click on your profile icon and choose ‘Edit Profiles’ from the dropdown menuChoose the profile you want to editUnder the ‘Parental Controls’ section, select the arrow next to ‘Profile PIN’Set a four-digit PIN and confirm your choice by entering your password

Make a Kids profile

Finally, you can also make Kids profiles within Disney Plus. This changes the design and layout of Disney+ to be tailored for younger audiences, and only broadcasts content below a 7+ age rating and without a content warning. You can create a Kids profile by doing the following:

Open Disney+ Click on your profile icon and choose ‘Edit Profiles’ from the dropdown menu

Confirm the profile you want to edit

Under the ‘Parental Controls’ section, move the Kids Profile slider to on (it turns blue)
