Buying a phone on Cyber Monday: What to look for
Smartphones are so expensive these days that a $10/£10 discount simply doesn’t cut the mustard. But if you’re looking at a $50/£50 or more discount, things quickly get confusing: what price is it normally, and is it cheap because it’s an older model? Are you being conned somehow? Was: $464.90 Now: $419.99 ($44.91 off) Was: $249.99 Now: $129.99 ($120 off) Was: $999.99 Now: $499.99 ($500 off) Was: £369 Now: £259.99 (£109 off) Was: £159.99 Now: £109.99 (£50 off) Was: £379.99 Now: £279.99 (£100 off) Was: £369 Now: £279 (£90 off) Was: £749.99 Now: £649.99 (£100 off) Was: £1,149 Now: £949 (£200 off) During Cyber Monday retailers will typically offer the best prices they have offered all year, but that doesn’t mean all retailers can be trusted – especially if you’re buying from an unknown quantity just to score an extra few percent off the purchase price. If a phone costs $999/£999 and it’s on sale for $600/£600 then clearly this is a good deal! Go get it! But do be aware that retailers are increasingly selling refurbished models for less, and it’s not always clear which is brand-new and which is not. Check the phone is unlocked, or at least is locked to your mobile carrier. Some deals may also have cashback options and special tariffs with certain networks, but if you can afford to do so then it will always work out cheaper to buy a phone outright.
